UK funding agencies & government moving forward to make research data freely available

The Wellcome Trust, one of the world’s biggest research charities, is adopting a stronger approach to ensure the works of funded scientists make results freely available within six months of first publication.

The organization is also in the final stages of launching a high calibre open access scientific journal that would be in direct competition with Nature and Science.

The UK government is backing calls for research data to be made freely available. A National Working Group on Expanding Access to Published Research Findings will make recommendations to government, research funders, publishers, and other interested parties on how access to research findings and outcomes can be broadened.
